Action on a daily basis... at home

Every individual, whether young or old, has a role to play in preserving our planet. Here are a few simple things you can put into practice every day to protect it.

Water

Water is not only used for eating and drinking at home, it is also useful for people's hygiene and keeping our homes clean.

Washing, doing the dishes, cleaning, and flushing the toilet are daily actions which represent 93% of a family's water consumption. If you have a garden, watering it consumes a lot of water...

Have you thought about how to save water yet?

  • Water is a precious resource. Don't let the tap run unnecessarily. Did you know that by turning off the tap during the three minutes you brush your teeth, you could save up to 20 litres of water?
  • Perhaps your parents can collect rainwater for the garden?

Electricity

What would we do without electricity at home? Have you thought about what stops working in your home when the electricity is cut off?

Heating, cooking and hot water are also made possible by gas, coal or other sources of energy. These raw materials are not inexhaustible, though, and our planet Earth took a long time to "manufacture" them.

What could you and your family do in order to save them?

  • When you leave your bedroom, don't forget to turn our the light,
  • When you are not using your computer, don't forget to turn off the screen. Its actually the screen that consumes the most electricity. In the same way, why leave the television switched on when you're not watching it?

Rubbish

Our life styles are generating more and more rubbish. But what is rubbish? A product becomes rubbish when it is put in the dustbin.

Those trainers that you don't like any more, the old computer that no longer works, the broken down car, and the leftovers from a meal, are all rubbish.

How can we reduce the volume of our rubbish?

  • Before throwing anything away, think carefully! Certain things can be used again. Instead of throwing away a toy that you don't like any more, perhaps you could repair it or give it to someone else,
  • In your town, rubbish may be sorted and collected in different dustbins. There may be different ones for glass, paper, recyclable packaging and other rubbish. You're your family separate paper for it to be recycled?
  • If you take dangerous chemicals from home (paint, solvents, batteries, etc) to the recycling center they will be dealt with properly and this will avoid polluting the water in the toilet or the kitchen sink: water is not a dustbin!
  • Remember that it is very important for the health of the whole family to wash dustbins regularly so as to avoid the build-up of bacteria and attracting insects such as cockroaches and ants, and animals such as mice. Also, do not leave rubbish lying around, your little brothers and sisters could injure themselves on tin cans or glass.
