Our day to day behavior... when you are in town

Every individual, whether young or old, has a role to play in preserving our planet. Here are a few simple things you can put into practice every day to protect it.

In your town...

Living in town is like living in a large family: it's a lot nicer when everyone is pleasant! We share the same streets, the same pavements, the same parks. We like to find them clean and quiet.

  • Put your sweet wrappers, paper cups and chewing-gum in the bin. And just because an apple core is biodegradable doesn't mean you can throw it anywhere ...
  • Rubbish which accumulates in our streets is a real menace. It attracts all kinds of pests such as rats and cockroaches. These creatures can transmit illnesses to people.

When you go shopping...

When you go shopping, you can consider a few choices in favor of the environment and health.

  • Suggest to your parents that they use baskets or bags so as to avoid using the supermarkets' plastic bags. This will reduce the volume of rubbish,
  • Suggest to your parents that they choose products with little packaging or which are in recyclable packaging.

In tropical countries...

In tropical countries, stagnant water allows the larvae of mosquitoes to develop. Mosquitoes can carry malaria, an illness which causes the death of more than one million people every year. Malaria is the main cause of death among children under five in Africa. In those countries, it is therefore very important to take care not to allow water to stagnate...

When you go for a walk...

During your leisure time, when you go for a walk in the park, in the country, by the sea or in the mountains, it is a pleasure to be close to nature. As nature and rubbish don't mix, don't leave anything behind you...

  • Do not throw plastic bags away in the countryside. They will pollute it for a long time: it can take up to 1,000 years for plastic bags to break down completely. They could also suffocate animals and fish which might try to swallow them,
  • Do not throw anything made of glass in the forest. Just a small piece can cause a fire in summer and injure rabbits for another one hundred years.

The Earth's resources are not inexhaustible...

Do your best not to waste them...

At home, in the garden, on the beach, at school, in the street, doing the shopping, on holiday, your behavior and that of your family and friends are important for the environment around us and for your health. The Earth's resources are not inexhaustible... Do your best not to waste them...

Don't hesitate to pass on to your friends these simple rules of behavior which could guarantee the health of our planet - there will then be more of us protecting it...
